Woodley Open Squad start their 2019/20 season against last years Div 2 winners.

The Woodley Open Squad began their 2019/20 season in their new South Regional Division 2 this morning (Sunday 22nd September), against last season’s winners of the division – Eagles.

The newly promoted Woodley squad came out fighting after a successful series of intense pre-season training sessions. Despite key players being injured, the team remained positive and had a ten-woman squad to ensure versatile combinations if needed.

The first quarter saw some really positive play by the girls, denying Eagles an early head start and turning over ball play by play. After two minutes, Woodley were 3-0 up after turning over the Eagles centre passes. Woodley remained in control throughout the quarter, but the experienced Eagles side finished the quarter just one ahead. 8-9.

Again, in quarter two, Woodley kept up with the pace of the Div 2 side and kept the pressure on. Double best player winner Isobel Doughty kept Woodley’s score line up with some fantastic movement around the circle and perfect accuracy with her shots. Eagles got into their rhythm and fed some excellent balls into their shooting circle. The quarter ended 16-21 to Eagles.

The third quarter saw Eagles take advantage of their extremely versatile bench, the side really showed their Div 2 experience. The attacking unit was fast and accurate and their defence quick and nimble. Despite this, Woodley made sure there was only an 8-goal difference going into the last quarter.

In Q4, Eagles really showed Woodley how to play in Div 2. They’re defensive unit turned over ball which was always converted. However, Woodley’s grit and determination saw some quick and positive mid-court play and some important turnovers when it mattered.
The game ended at 30-49 to Eagles. A great opening match for the Woodley side who worked from their positives and successfully identified areas of play to work on for next week’s game against Clan. Players Player and Opposition’s Player went to Isobel Doughty.
