Match Reports for 2011/2012 Season

Woodley Harriers V Wokingham Blue

1st Quarter
With ice cold temperatures, a chilling wind and only 3 of the normal team members available to play, Saturdays match was going to be an interesting one. Woodley took to the court with a new team of new of borrowed players in a mix of new combinations and started well putting pressure on Wokingham all the way down court, especially by Olivia (GK) and Georgina Barton (GD) in the defending circle against some extremely tall shooters, turning the ball over and ending the quarter 12-9 in Woodley’s favour.

2nd Quarter
The second quarter saw Wokingham get into their stride, making the most of their height in their shooting circle with Woodley’s defence just missing out, getting finger tips to the high feeds in and rebounds. Wokingham also had the luck of height on their side in their defence, putting pressure on Woodley to get the ball down the court and feeding to the shooters. Wokingham pulled away in the 2nd quarter taking the lead with a score of 27- 21

3rd Quarter
For the third quarter Woodley changed up some of the combinations with Ali coming on as WA to feed the circle, and Beth Champion moving back into the defensive circle despite her lack of height. It took the team a bit of time to settle to the new positions and combinations and we kept working hard turning numerous balls over throughout the court, however we struggled to convert the turn over’s into goals. Luckily for the defence the tall, troublesome shooter moved to GK after a Wokingham injury, but this meant the shooters were under added pressure to shoot in strong winds, now against a tall defender marking the shots. At the end of the 3rd quarter Wokingham had extended their lead to 37-28.

4th Quarter
We knew we had to give everything in the last quarter to try and close the score difference on Wokingham to get the extra point or even win. Elise new exactly what we had to, simply convert all of our centres and turn over the Wokingham’s first 4 centres, and we gave it a good go scoring the 1st 5 goals of the quarter. The whole team kept fighting to the end with some excellent interceptions in the centre court by Stevie Turner (C), Ali (WA) and Elise Sikorski (WD) with great support and feeding through the centre court. There was some great shooting from Laura Gier(GA) and Emily (GS), a new shooting combination, and a great defensive effort trying to stop the ball getting to Wokingham’s shooters. Woodley won the last quarter 12-8 narrowly losing and missing out on the extra point with a final score of 44-39 to Wokingham.

Tempest V Hilton
This was an exciting game right to the end. Hilton started the game strongly and went into the lead with Tempest trailing by 5 goals. Second quarter and again Hilton had the edge ending the quarter 25-19.
Tempest made a few changes and started the third quarter with great determination, the two shooters were much more accurate and we clawed back the deficit to 2 ending the quarter 34-36 in favour of Hilton.  The last quarter was brilliant for Tempest, scoring 75% of their shots, while Hilton had a sticky patch for the first 10 minutes. Hilton found their form in the last five minutes and the game was end to end. Tempest held their nerve won the game 50-48.
The game was played in excellent spirits. Well done to both teams.

Woodley Harriers V Sequence 1
1st Quarter
Woodley got off to a flying start and took an early lead. Both shooters Laura Gier and Michel Mayne were on great form and confidently put shots up from all areas of the circle. The score at the end of the first quarter 14 – 5 to Woodley.
2nd Quarter
The second quarter was just as energetic and a new shooting combination saw sequence begin to claw back a few goals. Score at half time was 26 – 13.
3rd Quarter
The third quarter saw a multitude of changes from both sides as both teams as both teams tried to maximise their playing potential, however it was again Woodley that came out on top and the quarter finished 37 – 19
4th Quarter
The final quarter saw both teams raising their level of play. The sun was setting fast and all shooters were incredible since the light was so poor and remarkably managed to score the most goals this quarter! Congratulations to Laura Gier or Woodley Harriers and Sam Chaney of Sequence 1 who both deservedly were awarded players of the match.

Woodley Harriers V Sequence 2
1st Quarter

On a dreary November afternoon both Sequence and Woodley took to the court, the game was evenly matched in the first quarter, with the Woodley defence of Jo Garwood (GK) and Becky Edwards (GD) working hard to turn over the ball to allow the team to convert some of the Sequence centres, but the Sequence defence also worked hard picking off the long balls into the circle which Woodley usually use with ease. Michelle Mayne (GS) worked hard in the attacking circle to pick off the rebounds.
2nd Quarter
Woodley picked up the pace in the second quarter, to start to pull away, but Sequence put pressure on the ball all the way up the court, Elise Sikorski (WD) put pressure on the balls into the circle aiding the defence to keep picking up the turnovers. Anna Warne moved from WA to C and Rachel came on at WA, the pair worked hard driving to the attacking circle to give strong feeds in to the shooters, Laura Gier (GA) and Michelle Mayne (GS) who had to work hard against the height of the defence to convert.
3rd Quarter
The Woodley team benefited from having a large squad, and so switched up the attack to put Katie Bennett (GS) into the circle, the change didn’t affect the Woodley momentum and the team ensured that they continued to increase their lead throughout the third 15.
4th Quarter
There was a concerted effort from both teams in the final 15, but Woodley managed to pull a last slog out of the bag. Changes were made again by Woodley putting Beth Champion on at WD, the ability to put on fresh legs throughout the game were certainly key to Woodley’s dominance of the game. Sequence tried to pull the score back but Woodley finished the quarter and the game 41-32.

Woodley Hornets V B's
1st Quarter
Woodley only had 7 players for this fixture so all the pressure was on with no subs to call on. The score was fairly even throughout the first quarter, excellent shooting from Katie Digby (B’s) kept them in the game. However, excellent defending from Olivia James at GD just made it too difficult for B’s to stay on top and Woodley ending up just ahead 9 – 8.
2nd Quarter
In this quarter the Woodley defence were outstanding Olivia James, Jamie Polston and Tynneka Brown, who made her debut for the Hornets, made it too difficult for the B’s attack and Hornets won this quarter quite easily 11-4.
3rd Quarter
The young Hornets team then got into their stride and continued to increase their lead throughout the second half of the game. Excellent link up play between Stevie Turner and Katherine Park in the centre third overwhelmed B’s defence and they fed the ball into the circle with great vision and flare.
4th Quarter
B’s continued to battle for every goal in the last quarter but Woodley were just too strong. Both Woodley shooters Ally Rusher and Lily Bergeret had to work hard to get shooting opportunities but were very accurate throughout the match. Final Score 47-28 to Woodley.

Woodley Harriers V Rock

1st Quarter
This fixture between the newly promoted Rock team and last years division one runners up started off very evenly matched under the blistering sun on Saturday. With goals being popped in at both ends the score stood at 9 goals all at the end of the first quarter.
2nd Quarter
Despite the heat, understandably neither team made any changes to their line up going in to the second quarter. The quarter started off equally matched again going goal for goal until Woodley found an extra surge with the defensive duo of Ellen McIvor and Becky Edwards putting pressure on The Rocks attack, the quarter ended 21-16 to Woodley.
3rd Quarter
At half time The Rock brought on a new GA, Woodley also changed up there attack with Katie Bennett coming on at GS and Rachel Willis going to WA, Michel Mayne and Sarah Anderson were very happy to go and re-apply suncream and rehydrate having both had a brilliant half. Woodley took a bit of time to settle with their new combination and The Rock managed to pull back a few goals to finish the quarter 30-27 to Woodley.
4th Quarter
The final quarter saw Sarah Anderson come back on at WA for Woodley and The Rock made another change in their shooting circle. With great tips from Woodley’s C, Anna Warne and many flying interceptions from player of the match WD, Elise Sikorski Woodley managed to dominate possession of the ball. Laura Gier used the balls that Elise picked off to punish The Rock as she could not miss during the last quarter despite the best efforts of The Rocks player of the Match, GK Jo Healing. At the end of a very competitive and enjoyable game the final score stood at 50 – 34 to Woodley Harriers.

Woodley Tempest 38 Wokingham Rubies 23
The final result was certainly not an easy win. The whole match was very even throughout with Woodley only leading by approx 3 goals at each quarter. Passing down the court for Woodley worked really well and Woodley were able to find space to pass accurately.

The game was played competitively but friendly and both teams respected good play from each other. Woodley had the same 7 throughout the match and made no changes this paid off and Woodley took a convincing win. Well done to all the players on both sides. Special thanks went to Helen Hanley who stepped in as GD, Helen had a good game certainly helping Tempest have a convincing win.

Woodley Tempest 29 Bullfinch 33.  Tempest had a very competitive match against Bullfinch. The match was very even throughout with Bullfinch managing to take the lead and win by 4 goals Final Score was Woodley 29 Bullfinch 33. The match was a really good competitive match from both sides with a few changes within the Woodley side that added a fresh approach. Bullfinch had 2 excellent shooters who did not miss from where ever they had the ball. Woodley’s defence tried hard to prevent the shots going in but to no avail. Woodley played well throughout the match but due to the accuracy of Bullfinch shooters unfortunately lost in the final quarter. Nice match play from both teams.

Woodley Tempest 47 Gemini 35 This was Woodley Tempest's first win of the season however this was not an easy win. Gemini started really well with a lead during the first quarter this was down to the usual slow start for Tempest and some excellent shooting from the both the GA and GS they hardly missed all match.

The score was even at the first quarter. Gemini continued to play well and by half time they were one goal ahead. Woodley introduced a new shooter who pushed the score into their favour by some accurate shots. Woodley changed the players around during the match and this eventually went in their favour having a good win with the final score at 47/35 to Woodley. Good netball was played and all enjoyed the competative play. Well done very enjoyable match.

Woodley Harriers V Wokingham Blue
1st Quarter
10-6: The first quarter started pretty evenly with both teams keen to get on the score sheet. Woodley managed to dominate the play however were often lacking the final ball into the Katie Bennett (GS) and Laura Gier (GA)
2nd Quarter
7-6: The second quarter started just as frustratingly as the last one ended. With lots of height and some very long arms (and some extremely annoying tips) in the Wokingham defence, Woodley found it hard to get the ball into the circle. Luckily for us when we did get it in to one of the shooters a goal usually followed! A few goals off balls turned over by Melissa Hill (WD) and Rachel Willis (C) just allowed Woodley to edge ahead and to keep their lead going into the 3rd quarter.
Quarter ended 17-12
3rd Quarter
7-10: This was Woodley’s toughest quarter as Wokingham brought on fresh legs in both centre court and in the circle making a real difference to their game. Woodley battled hard and Beth Champion (GD) (the eventual player of the match) and Jo Long (GK) had a busy 15mins as they defended our goal third tirelessly much to the relief of the rest of the team!
Quarter ended 24-22
4th Quarter
11-5: Wokingham started the 4th quarter just as strong. However much to Woodley’s relief their hard work in attack was starting to pay off and they managed to get the ball successfully around Wokingham’s defence in consecutive attacks for what felt like the first time in the match! Much of this was down to good feeding into the circle by Elise Sikorski (C) and Sarah Anderson (WA) and some great movement in the circle by Michel Mayne (GS) and Laura Gier (GA). The game finished 35- 28 to Woodley- a good result but I hope we will make less work for ourselves in the next game!

Woodley Harriers V Wokingham Red
1st Quarter
With the recent Long, Anderson and Bennett weddings and new Stewart addition to the Woodley team you would be forgiven for thinking that the Harries had a new squad this season! With it being the first game back, both teams were ready for the off, on a rather wintery day at the new Brackenhale venue. The quarter started well for Woodley, converting off both Wokingham and Woodley centres, despite not using the favoured ‘intercept’ ball! The Wokingham defence worked hard however the quarter ended 10-4 in Woodley’s favour.
2nd Quarter
The second quarter was Woodley’s best score wise, the shooters Michelle Mayne (GS) and Laura Gier (GA) worked hard to convert each opportunity supported by the centre court of Elise Sikorski (WA) and Anna Warne (C) who worked to drive the ball up the court to convert 18 goals in the second quarter. The Woodley defence of Jo Long (GK), Ellen McIvor (GD) and Beth (WD) ensured that the ball didn’t get to the tall GS from Wokingham, and put immense pressure on the shooters in the circle which stopped Wokingham from converting even 1 goal in the second quarter – a fantastic result to end the quarter 27-4 to Woodley.
3rd Quarter
The Woodley team benefited from having a large squad, and so switched up the attack to put Katie Bennett (GS) back into the circle, and Becky Edwards (GD) in with the mighty defence of Jo Long (GK), the changes didn’t affect the Woodley momentum and the team ensured that they continued to increase their lead throughout the third 15. The ‘Go-Go Gadget’ arms of Anna Warne enabled interceptions despite the wet conditions up and down the court and Woodley thrived off of these converting them all.
4th Quarter
Legs were getting a bit tired and faces becoming redder perhaps from lack of pre-season fitness by all! However everyone tried to dig in deep in the last quarter. Changes were made again by Woodley putting Ellen McIvor back to GK and Laura Gier in at GA, the ability to put on fresh legs throughout the game were certainly key to Woodley’s dominance of the game. Wokingham tried to push the momentum scoring 6 in the last quarter, but a spectacularly gymnastic interception by Elise Sikorski (WA) at the end of the quarter, despite the heavy legs was applauded by both teams and Woodley finished the quarter and the game 53-12.
